Day 8: Praia Vermelha & Copacabana

Today I went to the Sugar Loaf that gave me a nice view to Praia Vermelha (bottom right) and Copacabana. Because they are the first two beaches outside the highly polluted Guanabara Bay and because the rain of the last days had spilled a lot of dirt into the water, this was about the right distance for them to look clean. I can't wait to go to the Costa Verde next week (fingers crossed), to shoot some pristine beaches there.

  1. Very nice shot -- the shades of the water make it really coming alive. And that low cloud/fog covering the horizon gives it a nice dramatic touch. Great.

  2. That's an awesome vista that's quite breathtaking. The light looks really nice and bright, which I assume is why you had to brighten the foreground valley area that was probably in shadow, but it looks like you have done it just a little too much as it now seems brighter, or sharper or somehow different from the sea and clouds in the background. But only slightly and not enough for me to still not love it heaps!

  3. @ Kimbo
Thanks! Actually, I mostly worked on local contrast. The brightness difference is mostly caused by those clouds that were already partly blocking the sun. This is the unedited version:

  4. In the water it looks great to have all those lovely colours, and it looks natural, but I find the textures on the cliffsides, in the trees and on the buildings a bit too overdone. Looks oversharpened, or over-HDR'ed or something. Probably just over-contrasty. I prefer the more natural softness of the original. Perhaps if you have the contrasty version as a layer over the original and then lower it's opacity or put a mask on it with a light grey and soft brush on those cliff sections, it might work out better. Just an idea...
